Double Chocolate Puffed Rice Treats

Updated: Feb 14, 2021

These Double Chocolate Puffed Rice Treats are the best easy homemade Halloween candy, though you'll find me snacking on these all year long.

In Italy, we don't really have Rice Krispies Treats. In fact, I never knew they existed until I came to the UK. We do have something very similar though, some chocolate puffed rice treats called Nippon. I am not sure whether the company is Italian, but Nippon treats are a staple sweet treats in my home country. Unlike Rice Krispies Treats, there are no marshmallows involved. It's just chocolate and puffed rice (and a long list of preservatives, I must admit!).

I am going to be controversial here and just come out and say this: I actually prefer Nippon to Krispie Treats. I just do. They remind me of home, so I always ask my dad to send me some when he is preparing a food parcel (yeah, you read that right, I get food parcels from Italy cause I am a living stereotype). But as I mentioned above, Nippon are super-processed, when actually, they should be a super simple treat. So, for this strange, pandemic-style Halloween, I decided I would have a go at making them myself. And to make me feel extra special, I even elevated them by adding swirls of melted white chocolate. So good. So decadent. So simple.

So here is for the easy homemade Halloween treats.

Ways to customise these Double Chocolate Puffed Rice Treats:

  • Make them the other way round: here, I am using 300 gr of milk chocolate and about 35 gr white chocolate. But you can swap measuraments and have a white chocolate base with milk (or dark) chocolate swirls. Still delicious.

  • Use food colouring: if you are really into the Halloween mood, use one or two drops of orange food colouring and add it to the melted white chocolate to get perfect, Halloween-themed orange swirls. Especially fun for kids (who am I kidding? For adults too).

  • Use a nut butter: If you love the stickiness of Rice Krispy Treats and/or the nuttiness of a Reese's peanut butter cup, feel free to add a couple of tablespoons of your favourite nut or seed butter to the mixture.

  • Add some flavour: I mean, these treats are already pretty damn good, but if, on top of the orange-coloured swirls, you wanted to add a couple of drops of orange extract, I would not be mad at you. In fact, it would be totally understandable.

Key steps to Make these Simple Halloween Treats:

  1. Melt you milk chocolate: use a double boiler to slowly melt your chocolate. Remove from the heat and let it cool down for a few minutes.

  2. Mix with the puffed rice: add your puffed rice to a bowl and then add the melted chocolate. Mix gently, so that you don't break many rice puffs.

  3. Transfer to a baking tin: I used a brownie tin, and filled it by 3/4, as I wanted my puffed rice treats to be thicker. A loaf tin would also work.

  4. Melt the white chocolate: and then drizzle it all over your chocolate treats.

  5. Leave in the fridge: these treats will need at least a couple of hours in the fridge to set. When you are ready to enjoy them, take them out of the fridge and cut them up into squares. Store in the fridge for up to 5 days, though I doubt they'll last that long.

Ingredients:

Makes 10-12 puffed rice treats

300 gr milk chocolate

35 gr white chocolate

100 gr puffed rice pops

Method:

  1. Slowly melt your milk chocolate in a double boiler. Once it's fully melted, remove the chocolate from the heat and let it cool for about 5-10 minutes.

  2. To a bowl, add your puffed rice pops. Add the melted chocolate and mix well.

  3. Transfer the chocolate treats to a baking tin lined with baking paper. I used a brownie tin, and filled it by 3/4, as I wanted my puffed rice treats to be thicker. A loaf tin would also work.

  4. Slowly melt your white chocolate, always in a double boiler. Then drizzle it generously all over your puffed rice treats.

  5. Leave in the fridge to set for at least 2 hours.

  6. When you are ready to enjoy your puffed rice treats, take them out of the fridge and cut them up into squares.

These double chocolate puffed rice treats can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Enjoy!
